Biostratigraphy Portal for Unocal Oil

In the summer of 2002, ASG began working with Tramontane, a Utah company specializing in geologic data systems, to maintain a portal and provide mining for biostratigraphic data, or data related to the conditions and order of deposition of sedimentary rocks.

The biostratigraphy portal for Unocal Oil provides a web-based system to study massive amounts of data, helping geologists and other experts analyze complex scientific information from multiple sources. Using the portal, scientists for Unocal Oil can reduce risks of drilling and improve results for oil exploration.

More on Portals and Data Mining

The data portal integrates data from multiple sources, significantly reducing the time and effort required to assemble and manipulate data sets. Using a data portal, a scientist can spend less time producing charts, maps, and tables, instead focusing on interpreting data into information to be understood, and knowledge that can be used.

A system that provides in-depth mining of complex, massive data can detect trends and patterns that are often difficult for scientists to visualize through data association. Such systems can provide great rewards for information discovery, freeing scientists to analyze and discover reasons behind trends, rather than spending time and effort discovering the data patterns themselves.

Biostratigraphy Portal Features

The biostratigraphy portal for Unocal is a web-based data integration system for biostratigraphic and geologic data. It is designed to take data in a relatively raw form and produce information that is ready to use, including charts, maps, and spreadsheets.

The web interface allows secure, encrypted access to data and files. Graphical navigation helps scientists and data technicians rapidly search and analyze data by geographic area, age, stratigraphy, quality of data, or well metadata characteristics, such as total sand percentage.

The portal seamlessly integrates data from different sources, such as government and commercial suppliers, into a single, unified system. The portal is flexible and accommodates many types of file and data formats for fast uploading and downloading of files.

The portal provides integrated geographical information system (GIS) mapping for rich data visualization. It produces contour maps, point maps, multi-series age-depth plots, and multi-plots. The portal also produces summary reports as selected by individual users.

Partnership for Future Maintenance and Development

The portal technology was developed by E811, the commercial technology transfer partner of ASG. The Unocal biostratigraphy portal functions in partnership with Tramontane, Inc. After initial development of the Unocal portal was completed, ASG began providing maintenance for the system in the summer of 2002.

Tramontane provides ASG with monthly data updates, which ASG loads into the biostratigraphy system. ASG answers requests for different data presentations, providing the system with methods for data mining and visualizing patterns. ASG also provides enhancements to the biostratigraphy portal as needed.
